Almost Losing Someone to Suicide and Dealing with Depression (Shin Kicking Mondays)

July 13, 2014 By Berni

I hijacked my own platform to talk about depression and suicide prevention; something many people are uncomfortable talking about still to this day.

Back in 2011, a close friend at the time nearly took their own life. I read the suicide letter–it shocked me to the core. At the time, there weren’t a lot of people talking about depression openly. So I didn’t know how to deal with it both as a friend and someone who has suffered from bouts of manic depression herself.

Then I met Amy Clover, founder of Strong Inside Out, in 2013. She was on a mission to bring 30 donation-based fitness bootcamps to 30 cities across the continent to spread hope for depression and suicide prevention. All I could think to myself was Wow, I wish I had something like Strong Inside Out sooner.

If you or someone you know is dealing with depression or talking about suicide, hope is coming to a city near you. I’ve dedicated this episode to support strongies like you get the help you need.

WHAT’S IN TODAY’S SHIN KICKING TOOLKIT?

As Amy Clover taught me last year when we first met in person during her 30×30 Project and again when we featured her on The Shut Up Show:

Everyone struggles. It’s okay to not be okay because we all are.

Rather than me regurgitating in writing what it means to be strong inside out, take a look and listen to Amy Clover as she shares her powerful words about reaching the 30th birthday she almost didn’t have:

Want to spread hope for depression and suicide prevention?

There are 3 ways you can help:

  1. Share Strong Inside Out Tour with your network, friends or family
  2. Make a contribution if this message speaks to you
  3. Get involved if you’re in any of the cities on the map

Amy Clover Moves Us to Be Strong Inside Out – SUS23

January 7, 2014 By Berni

Today on our show, we had a blast catching up with Amy Clover, my sister-from-another-mister (yes, I’m 12). Amy had me at “Why not me?” while I was listening to an interview she gave earlier this year to promote her 30×30 Project. If you’ve ever had one of those “I want to be her friend” kind of moments, I personally felt that way about Amy long before I even met her in person this past Spring.

It’s not often you hear someone kick off their interview with “to celebrate the 30th birthday I almost didn’t have, I’m touring across North America giving donation-based fitness bootcamps in 30 cities to raise funds and awareness for suicide prevention and depression.”

Being involved in bringing Amy’s 30×30 Project to Milwaukee helped me find my own shut up moment inspiring me to co-start a movement with Phil you now know as The Shut Up Show. Yeah, that’s how good she is! You know what else she’s good at? Robot dancing. Too bad Phil stopped broadcasting before she could show you moves like Jagger.

Dominating Your World & Making the Best of the Decision You Have – Episode 14

July 11, 2013 By Berni

Imagine how different your life would be if you never took action. If you never chose yourself. Things would be very different, for better or worse. But in the process, you might not have ever stumbled upon this blog. If Phil and I didn’t choose ourselves to start this show, we wouldn’t even be having this conversation.

Watch and listen as Phil takes us through the shut up moments he experienced this past weekend after he attended the World Domination Summit in Portland, for the first time, where his life and business has been changed forever.

Share Some Shut Up Love –>  We have to fix shit in our life before we can fix shit in our business. Until the two converge, we struggle. @philgerb

Fun Facts:

  • World Domination Summit 2013 had 3000 attendees, which is 10 times the size it started with in 2011.
  • WDS was sold out in 7 minutes. Phil did not have a ticket to attend the conference until months later after snagging a spot from a person in Berni’s network who couldn’t attend and had to sell her tickets.
  • Before attending WDS, Phil had never taken a vacation before.
  • Amy Clover, a former guest and good friend, stood on stage to address an audience she once sat in to talk about the epic movement she started after attending WDS last year.

Defining Shut Up Moment:

Donald Miller was the last keynote speaker at WDS. He talked about imagining three circles. The inner circle is Self. The next circle is Shame. Your Personality is the crust that prevents people from getting at your self. My big take away is really thinking what I’m shameful about. What if I’m not the identity I’m projecting. What if these yellow glasses are a really mask preventing me from being seen. And instead of giving me sight, they’re a mask that prevent others from seeing in. – Phil

Shut Up Tips:

Receiving is the act of embracing someone else’s gift. Who the hell do I think I am that I should deny someone the joy of giving me their gift? What kind of arrogant ass do I think I am? -Phil

Sometimes we get gummed up in the big picture of changing the world. You’re not gonna change the whole world. You’re gonna change your world. -Phil

The genesis of this show was that we as solopreneurs needed a platform like this, which we didn’t feel existed. So we chose ourselves and built it. – Berni

Imagine if we never chose ourselves, we never took action, we wouldn’t even be having this conversation. That’s why for me I decide to choose myself every day. – Berni

When I’m gripped with fear and have a dilemma, I just choose. I don’t let destiny or fate pick me. I make a choice and I move in the direction I want to because I want to have control over what path I want to be on that will lead me along my journey. If the journey twists and turns, that’s totally cool, but I have a choice to get back on the path if I veer off. – Berni

We have to release the outcome and just enjoy the journey. Enjoy taking the wrong step. – Phil

When we talk about success, we’re not talking about money or time. We are talking about being able to do more of what you love. The freedom to choose what you want to do every day. That’s success. – Phil

Phil Recommends:

Mitch Joel, the author of CTRL ALT Delete, recently wrote a post about taking your life back without unplugging from technology.

Donald Miller, the author of Blue Like Jazz and Storyline, talks about how to take the next step.

Amy Clover Moves Us to Be Strong Inside Out – Episode 7

Fun Facts:

  • Amy has a fear of singing in public.
  • Chris Brogan refers to Amy as “cray cray Amy” after Berni tweeted about Amy’s high-intensity interval training experience at the 30×30 bootcamp.
  • Amy is a catalyst of bringing mental health and physical health closer together in practice.
  • Amy is engaged to the awesome Rick Mulready, a fellow podcaster and entrepreneur.

Defining Shut Up Moment:

In 2005, Amy nearly ended her life. Thankfully, with the help of friends and family, she decided to stop carrying the burden of clinical depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder on her own. She got professional help and began healing herself through fitness. For nearly a decade, Amy has been dedicated to offering hope and healing through her personal training practice and personal empowerment blog.

In 2012, after attending Chris Guillebeau’s World Domination Summit and learning about all the amazing projects other people were launching, Amy knew she wasn’t tapping into her full potential. This spawned Amy’s lofty idea for 30×30 Project, which would allow her to spread the message of hope through an epic movement.

Shut Up Tips:

3 Golden nuggets from Amy after 30×30 Project:

1. Don’t wait for permission. Ask, “Why not me?” You are your movement.

2. Stop waiting to be ready. You’re never going to be ready. Just take action. Everything else will follow.

3. Don’t underestimate the power of face-to-face connection. Online is powerful, but the message is amplified through movements in-person.

Each person involved had their own movement brewing and it was so exciting to be a part of that to ignite action. – Amy

To change the world, you have to start. – Phil

I left World Domination Summit feeling like people were doing so many amazing things and I knew I wanted to do something extraordinary. – Amy

I don’t need anything else from anybody. I’m just going to make this happen. It was like step, step, step. – Amy

I don’t need anymore resources. I don’t need more time. I just need to shut up and get started. – Phil

I’ve always been one to do it on my own. I’ve never been one to ask for help. That’s what got me into trouble with my depression in the first place. – Amy

Knowing that I had to get better at asking for help, I told people this is what I’m doing. If you can help, that would be great. If not, I’m going to do this any way. – Amy

Offer a benefit to other people’s communities and that is one way of asking for help, but in a way that serves others. – Amy

You’re serving a cause, you’re helping a mission. Everyone gains from that effort. – Berni

Attach yourself to something that really matters and that’s going to help so many people and you in the process; how can anyone have a problem with you asking for help? – Berni

A lot of people see a strong outside and miss the inside sometimes. Ask for help, it means you’re strong. It doesn’t mean you’re weak. – Phil

Everyone struggles. It’s okay to not be okay because we all are. – Amy

We’re all perfectly broken. – Phil

We all cray cray. – Berni
