Today Phil comes clean about something he’s been wanting to talk about.
I’ve kinda missed having hangouts like these because it reminds me of where we started just five months ago when Phil and I decided to launch this tiny project. A project that we’d prioritize up to 1 hour a week to do just for the sheer benefit of having some type of support to bridge our lone entrepreneurial islands. A project that has evolved into 3 episodes per week, tens of thousands of views to-date, and an upcoming podcast at the end of this month.
Although Phil and I are absolutely in love with our baby, The SHUT UP Show, it’s nice to step back from the interviews for a few minutes. To prioritize our weekly Berni and Phil pulse checks. To remember our purpose and the genesis of the show.

Defining Shut Up Moment:
PHIL – ON FINDING YOUR ONE THING:
I found my why and then my one thing became me. I’m focused on making me better because if I’ve got nothing in my bucket, I’ve got nothing for you. It’s not complicated to fill your bucket, but it isn’t always easy.
We have to reframe things in a positive way. I look for the bright side. I believe that every dark cloud has a silver lining. And by silver lining it doesn’t always mean good. You look for the lesson and you make the best that comes your way. Mine started with weight loss. Then I’m going to heal myself after the divorce. Then getting the business clarity is important as well. All that stuff together and focus on me is what I’m going to do and all businesses need to do. It’s deciding to take massive action.
BERNI – ON LEADING WITH PURPOSE:
When I was a kid I used to always tell people I wish I knew what my purpose was… I wish I knew that one thing I wanted to be when I grow up. At the core of everything I’ve ever gone through, when I connect the dots looking back, I think I did intrinsically know that the one thing I wanted to do in life that I was yearning for since I was about 12 or 13 years old. It was that I wanted to make a positive impact in the world and in children’s lives. At the time I didn’t know what it was called or what the name of the title would be.
The reason I was able to move through all the change in my life was because I had that purpose in mind. I desired the purpose so much. The purpose was to be that person I wanted to be and to do the things that would make a positive impact. Whatever it takes. Whatever form that comes in. And whatever venue and platform you need to go do that in. My yearning to succeed at that was far greater than the risk I’d fail at it.

It’s not complicated to fill your bucket, but it isn’t always easy. – Phil
If you don’t have the luxury to hire help, then focus on your core and deliver the crap out of it. Be really good at what you do and be unafraid to raise your rates. – Phil
My goal isn’t this big massive thing. It’s one step in front of the other. – Phil
Small choices. Big results over time. – Phil
Sometimes I look back and wonder how I was strong enough to get through all the challenges. – Berni
Don’t put titles on it. Don’t put parameters around it. Figure out what you wanna do and then go do it. Then take some steps and move towards it. Lasting change changes behaviors and changes mindsets. Focus on those baby steps. – Phil
